Registration & Permits
Many expats who want to live or work in Slovenia for more than 90 days will need to apply for a residence permit. The type of application you submit depends on your nationality and reason for moving to Slovenia.
Entering Slovenia
Slovenia has been a member of the EU since 2004 and the Schengen Area since 2007. If you hold a valid visa or residence permit issued by another Schengen country, you may enter and stay in Slovenia and other Schengen states for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
You may enter Slovenia with:

An identity card or passport (EU citizens)
-
A passport if no visa or residence permit is required – Third Country Nationals
-
A passport with a valid visa (if required) – Third Country Nationals
-
A valid residence permit and passport – Third Country Nationals
NOTE
Passport must be valid for at least three months after the intended stay in Slovenia.
Your Nationality
EU, EEA & Swiss citizens
Citizens of EU/EEA countries and Switzerland do not need a residence permit to enter the Republic of Slovenia.
To enter you need valid identity card or a valid passport, irrespective of the reason for entering or the reason for residing in the country – employment, study, selfemployment, relocation, following your partner,etc.
If you stay in the Slovenia for more than 3 months (180 days) you need to register at your local municipality (Upravna Enota) and apply for temporary residence permit.
EU citizens may also apply for a residence registration certificate immediately after entering the Republic of Slovenia.
NOTE
A more favourable treatment for entry and residence is also accorded to their family members.
Third Country Nationals
Third-country nationals wishing to enter and stay in Slovenia for tourism, business, work, study, family reunification, or other purposes must obtain a visa (if required) or a residence permit from a Slovenian diplomatic or consular mission before entry.
Holders of a Schengen short-stay visa (Type C) may enter Slovenia and stay for up to 90 days in any 180-day period within the Schengen area, or until the visa expires.
Holders of a Schengen long-stay visa (Type D) or a residence permit issued by another Schengen country may enter Slovenia with a valid travel document and stay for up to 90 days in any 180-day period in other Schengen countries, excluding the issuing country, or until the document expires.

Digital Nomads -
Third Country Nationals
ONLY
Slovenia has introduced a temporary residence permit for digital nomads since 21 November 2025.
Digital nomad is:

A foreigner who is not a citizen of an EU or EEA countryo

Has to apply for a temporary residence (issued for up to one year and cannot be extended) permit for digital nomads at any diplomatic representation or consular post of the Republic of Slovenia abroad.

Type of Residence permits
Temporary Residence Permit
If you plan to stay in Slovenia longer than 90 days for a specific purpose, such as:
-
employment or work, self-employment, provision of services, seeking employment
-
studies, vocational training, or other forms of education
-
family reunification with a family member who lives and works in Slovenia
-
retirement (pensioner status)
you must submit Application for a Residence Registration Certificate for EU Citizens or Third Country Nationals within 8 days of entry or before the end of the 90-day stay at the local administrative unit.
Note:
EU citizens temporary residence issued for specific purpose for up to 5 years (linked to 2 years renewal of temporary address),
Third Country Citizens issued for 1 year.
Permanent Residence Permit
Available after 5 years a continuous and lawful period of residence in Slovenia .
For EU citizen Permanent residence is issued without time and purpose limitation, provided the conditions are met.

Slovenian administration system uses two addresses upon registration: Temporary and permanent address. Foreigners can only register in Slovenia on a temporary address during the first 5 years of living in Slovenia. Your permanent address from abroad will be registered in the system.
